When this Covid-19 crisis was new and not much known or understood, we could understand the cautions taken by our elected officials. We willingly gave politicians a pass because we did not want our medical facilities to be swamped and overwhelmed and did not want our medical resources to be ravaged. Also, we did not want our daily essentials to be totally gutted and depleted. But, it seems that in these last three to four weeks, while the politicians have not missed a paycheck since all this started, the citizens are being spitefully hampered (at worst) and simply disregarded (at best). While large corporate operations and big box stores are making money, small businesses are being shafted. Meanwhile, many Pennsylvanians are not drawing paychecks and are becoming increasingly frustrated. Countless Citizens who have not received unemployment compensation have been told to reapply and start the process over again. Industrious Citizens have seen hard earned savings eroded and retirement investments plunge. In the meantime, the City of Philadelphia has a $649M deficit and will layoff employees and cut municipal services. Also, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is staring at an enormous deficit. This is unsustainable. An anemic economy in the Commonwealth will only compound the perils precipitated by the Covid-19 crisis. To manage this crisis, we must now change our tactics. We must fully reopen the Philadelphia and Pennsylvania economies and fight Covid-19 at the same time.
